We remove the WI designation and replace it with a writing encounter designation (W). The new designation involves more frequent, low-stakes writing assignments rather than the existing 30-page requirement. Faculty who currently teach WI courses could re-designate their courses and faculty who already meet the new criteria for their courses can add the designation. Some faculty may also consider modifying their existing courses to contribute to this requirement. All departments will be encouraged to offer at least one W-designated course (if appropriate). The writing faculty at Lehigh can provide guidance, rubrics, and recommendations to facilitate expanding writing instruction in existing courses. A formal system for approving and specifying the requirements of W-designated courses will need to be developed. This new requirement provides a mechanism for infusing writing throughout the curriculum and ensuring that all students encounter multiple opportunities to further develop their writing competency and to learn writing styles from different practitioners, across disciplines, and for different audiences.
