1. Summarize and report out on the results of the SKS exercise.

  • Start:
    1. Organizing our time better because we have several deadlines to meet (DEBUT for VentureWell, Stage II VentureWell). We have many things we want to accomplish, so we need to plan our time accordingly. This can be done by finding a common time on the weekend for the GSIF members to meet and reorganize with each other for both long and short term goal planning.
    2. Working with past GSIF members of our team to a greater extent, whether they have already graduated or are current seniors. These students have a great deal of experience, which can greatly benefit us and increase project progression/productivity.
  • Keep:
    1. Continuing to communicate well with our team, both in terms of the project and in a friendly supportive manner. This is important for maintaining good teamwork and getting work done, and allowing for us to rely on each other by feeling comfortable to reach out to each other when we are struggling to keep up.
    2. Delegating tasks among the team has worked well for us thus far, and since our team members know what they should be doing, we all know what to work on and what is expected of us among our team.
  • Stop:
    1. Wasting time by procrastinating. Procrastinating cuts into the small amount of valuable time we have. It reduces productivity and quality of work as we have less time available to work on a task as it was earlier pushed off. Thankfully ,we are realizing this now as a team before it becomes a more significant issue.
    2. Having conversations that go off into tangents. It is easy to get distracted by the task at hand because of side conversation. This idea does somewhat tie into the reduced output due to procrastination, but the consequence is different as finding times to meet as a large group is very challenging to begin with and especially should not be wasted.

2.Develop a detailed Collaboration Plan for your team clearly articulating your Goals (Small g and Big G), Roles, Procedures, and Relationships.

  • Small Goals:
    • Optimizing the sensitivity and specificity of our device.
    • Increasing the potential shelf life of our product.
  • Big Goals:
    • Implement our device into the healthcare system in Sierra Leone.
    • Upon successful implementation of the device in Sierra Leone in initial key areas, expand to nationwide implementation.
  • Roles:
    • Supervisor: To guide students and provide feedback on the work they’ve completed so far. If the students get stuck, the supervisor may suggest paths they could follow to proceed.
    • Team leader: Delegates tasks that need to be completed for a specific project. Responsible for keeping everything on track and done on time.
    • Team members: Accomplish tasks delegated by the team leader, and contribute ideas that will help further the project.
  • Procedures:
    • Applying for grants that will help fund our project and activities.
    • Presenting our research to different entities/groups to receive feedback on our project.
    • Receiving IRB approval in order to gain permission to work with patients/samples of blood.
    • Writing papers that will improve our project’s credibility and summarize our progress so far.
  • Relationships:
    • Build a good relationship with Dr. Cheedy Jaja, as we are using his IRB in Sierra Leone to work with patients there.
    • Maintain communication between St. Luke’s hospital and local blood banks.
    • Communicate with our supervisor to receive weekly feedback on our project progress.
