Something that has sparked creativity in me is a song I relate to at the moment. It is called “20 something” by SZA, and it captures a lot of what I think many people around my age go through in college or post college. The song is entitled “20 something” to ensue that the issues discussed in the sog relate to everyone in their 20s as people figure out who they want to be in life whether in regards to their love life, personal life, work life, and more. Often times we feel alone and unsure about the path we want to choose. Personally, I have loved this song for a while, but only recently felt a deeper connection from the lyrics. SZA sings, “Hopin’ my 20 somethings won’t end, Hopin’ to keep the rest of my friends, Prayin’ the 20 somethings don’t kill me, don’t kill me”. Throughout the song she talks about the uncertainty of one’s 20’s, and how different this time in one’s life is from their childhood or adulthood. When your growing up you have a schedule to follow, and parents to tell you what’s right and what’s wrong. When your past 30, most likely you will have a job, a home, a spouse and maybe even kids, and will thus fall back into a different but similar routine. In your 20’s, this schedule and certain way of life is not as present, as many people are switching jobs, moving to different cities, and essentially trying out different lifestyles until they find the right one for them. This time can come with a lot of doubt and nerves as there tends to be a lot of pressure to find a good job, make a lot of money right out of college, and overall have your life “together”. But, the truth is, not a lot of us actually do, and that is okay. What this song has taught me is that there will always be doubts, and sometimes it’s easy to run away from your fears and doubts, but it is also an exciting time to figure out yourself and allow yourself the time to do these things. If you don’t, you will waste away one of the best times in your life waiting for bigger and better things to happen, and ignoring what is already in front of you.
