CSR
This week in our corporate social responsibility seminar we focused on the Apple Case and the role that a corporation has in making ethical decisions. This concept also continued in our Wednesday class of the week, discussing the PG&E lawsuit in the movie Erin Brockovich. Prior to this class, I was aware of the extent of enforced and excessive labor; however, after watching the video on Monday my perspective shifted. The conditions that individuals must have to endure in order to upkeep profits and production are inhumane. The question at stake is whether or not a corporation should make ethical decisions or intervene with partnering companies that have ill practices. I found this dynamic very interesting because despite Apple’s backlash users, such as myself, will continue to buy their products.
Internship Seminar
I found this week’s seminar very enriching in regards to how I should present myself at all times, especially during interviews, and how to sharpen my resume. What resonated with me in this course is that a resume should be a living document of everything that I have done and that I should build it up brick by brick. The EY video on effective communication video made me realize all the meticulous actions that I should be aware of when networking, public speaking, or interviewing. Moreover, I enjoyed reflecting on our internships towards the end of our internship, and better analyzing the working environment of my job. Additionally, I look forward to presenting our Internship Seminar presentation.
Internship
This week for my internship Domenico was happy with the Step 8 toolkit option that I provided him with. He wanted me to take it a step further and create a guideline specifically under a microscope on how people can better identify microplastics in samples. This could either be by shape, color, size, texture, etc. Domenico wants me to collaborate with Rory and help distinguish the key factors that microplastics can be classified as, so she will be able to upload the acquired data to a database that she has been working on. I’m excited to work for Domenico in these final days because I now truly feel like I am helping their Trash2Treasure project.
Cultural Immersion
Last weekend, my friends and I went to Rome and it was quite the experience. Going to Rome for the first time is surreal. However, Friday morning my girlfriend had a 10 hour layover in Milan, so I got to spend half the day with her. It was really nice to see her since I didn’t get to see her before I left for Milan. In Rome, I couldn’t believe that all the buildings and historic sites are still somewhat intact. It was truly impressive. We got to watch Italy vs. Switzerland played in one of the squares in Rome; unfortunately, Italy lost this game two to zero. You could really feel the sorrow in everyone’s heart. I think my favorite thing that I saw in Rome was the Colosseum and the capitol building. Both structures were near each other and were huge. It was really breathtaking to see for the first time.
