In class on Wednesday, we further discussed the meaning and jobs of a Corporation. This began with a list of questions we were tasked with thinking about before the start of class, which I found interesting because many of them were thought provoking and I wasn’t sure about the answer. After attempting these questions, we watched a documentary in class about the definition of a corporation and people’s perception and difficulty defining this term because it has such a wide and diverse meaning. I found this very interesting because as a student in the business school we discuss corporations almost on a daily basis but I did not have a deeper understanding of the term until now.
I was not in class this week due to my spider bite I got in Florence! I went to the doctor who told me that this must have been a bite from an infected spider or I was allergic to this kind of spider leading to my reaction. I got antibiotics and other medicines to heal the bite and stop my fever, allowing me to be in class and work the rest of the week. Therefore, I do not know what exactly was discussed or what happened in this class but I am looking forward to learning more about everyone’s internship and workplace edict. So far I have really enjoyed listening to what my classmates’ work experience is like and comparing the similarities and differences to my own!
This week I have been asked to research luxury fashion brands and startups sustainability, technological, diversity equity and inclusion as well as educational efforts in the fashion industry. I have found this interesting because I have come to understand what luxury brands do beyond their products as well as which ones are more technologically advanced and looking to further sustainability efforts. I additionally found a slow down of sustainable movements within the past 3 years as many companies have found a project to work on and keep only partaking in this effort rather than expanding and further developing their sustainability efforts. This was a big challenge for me because I was tasked with finding new sustainable efforts within the last year. I overcame this by starting to look at smaller and newer brands rather than the biggest luxury brands because they seem to be more open to working on their sustainability through projects and partnerships than the biggest brands. Additionally, this week I was a part of a meeting with a Harvard professor and a French university and I was tasked with taking notes about the content of the meeting. In this meeting, no one natively spoke English and they were only having the meeting in English because it was their common language. This was challenging for me because everyone had very thick accents and would use terms that did not exactly make sense and I had a lot of trouble understanding what they were saying quickly enough to write everything down. Moreover, I was not briefed on the background or content of the meeting beforehand, making it extremely difficult for me to understand the topic of the meeting and transcribe it.
This week my parents came to Milan! They arrived Sunday night and we’re here for 3 days, before going to Monaco, Nice in the South of France and Paris to see my sister. It was very nice to see them and show them around the city! We went to the Duomo, Brera street, and walked around the shops in these areas. The first day they were here we went to a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Duomo, which I was very excited about because I have been wanting to do this since we got to Milan but I have not had time. We also went to the area past the Duomo which also has a lot of restaurants and shops. I found this very interesting to see because on a daily basis we only stay in very specific areas of the city and it was exciting to explore and see what else is here!
