What Motivates health information exchange in social media?

“What Motivates health information exchange in social media? The roles of social cognitive theory and perceived interactivity,” walks readers through the possible reasons why people feel comfortable enough and want to share health information on social media. The authors of the article hope that they can find the greater implications of ways to increase exchange online.

Lin and Chang want to emphasize the reason they are conducting this experiment is because “..little attention has been paid to investigate the relationships between the social media environment, perceived benefits, and an individual’s behavior simultaneously.(2)” The authors mention that there are two outcomes that can cause one to share on social media. Health self-management competence is when people share to find and feel better about the way they are managing their health. Health social relationship enhancement is when the sharing of health information can strengthen their relationships with others and social status. They go on to relate these two outcomes to human-to-human interaction, where people are using social media to communicate with others. As well as human to information interaction, which refers to when people seek social media for its content. Through a questionnaire with Facebook users, Lin and Chang concluded that the benefiting outcome is one of the main driving forces that causes people to share their information. Lin and Chang do a great job at relating this to social cognition theory, in which people’s actions are controlled by their experiences, what they desire and what they perceive from others. This makes sense given the fact that if someone knows sharing their information will lead to a better connection with others, the more likely they are going to do it. In all, most people use social media for themselves, and to have some personal gain from it.

Regarding the greater importance of this, Lin and Chang end the article with ways people in social media jobs can enhance people’s want to share information online. This can be beneficial, but it does not speak about how consequential the exchange of health information can be. For example, for people who experience medical anxiety having so much medical information online may not be the best thing. Even through a simple google search, one symptom of something can lead to the worse-case scenario popping up. So, it’s a possibility that social media is affecting how people view their symptoms and seek medical advice. Exchange of health online could cause some good, but not all information is accurate so it can cause harm as well. It will be interesting to see the impact that sharing of health information will have on the medical world and society in general.

  1. This sounds like interesting research that I had never thought about before. I definitely agree with your last point in how although social media can enhance people’s ability to share information, it also can result in more fear when you are presented with an overload of conflicting ideas. I’d be interested to see if the authors could extend this research into seeing what type of social media sites people feel more comfortable sharing on/with what audiences and how demographics plays a role in that.

  2. Your point about social media influencing how people see their own symptoms is really interesting. I also like your discussion of the pros of finding online communities that deal with health issues. Besides encountering misinformation, a big concern of mine with sharing medial information online is security. Historically, health information is highly protected in the United States (like HIPPA). “Genetic information” is even a protected characteristic; however, if one chooses to post about their health online, there’s always a risk. For example, an employer finding someone’s social media page that details their chronic illness may choose not to hire that person.

  3. I think it’s super interesting to think about how reciprocity comes into play with health information sharing on social media: people think that sharing personal information will lead to establishing connection and learning from others with similar ailments. Because this information is very sensitive, it does take a lot to earn someone’s trust to share health details most of the time.
