In Kiousis’ paper, “Interactivity: A Concept Explication,” the idea and entity of interactivity was defined in regards to communication technology. Throughout the dissection of the definition of interactivity, Kiousis was able to provide general background information as well as multiple literature reviews to aid in conceptualizing the many theories regarding interactivity.
Throughout his analysis of the many different theories tied to interactivity, Kiousis argued that interactivity is a factor of communication technology of which its continuous development and nuances will always have a hand in shaping the future of communication technology. Kiousis said, “As long as we all accept that the term implies some degree of receiver feedback and is usually linked to new technologies, why should there be a problem? The dilemma is that, while these basic tenets are frequently agreed upon, the components and features that comprise the various definitions can lead to great discrepancies in scholarly output.” In layman’s terms, Kiousis argues that interactivity is an ever-evolving component of communication technology.
I find a lot of validity in Kiousis’ arguments and ideologies of interactivity as it relates to communication technology. My Philosophy of Cognitive Science class gave me the opportunity to fully conceptualize interactivity as an entity of the mind. With having that knowledge and now being able to learn in depth about interactivity as it relates not only to technology, but also communication, I feel confident in validating Kiousis’ perspective and arguments that deal with the idea that interactivity is an exchange of technological interpersonal communication.
The thing about interactivity and Kiousis’ viewpoints that I find so fascinating are the many parallels between how the human mind conceptualizes human communication and how the human mind is now able to conceptualize technological communication, simply because of the never ending development of technology. Interactivity has many parallels to artificial intelligence; leading me to wonder if, as interactivity continues to develop, there will be a new reliance and/or dependency on it to fill the needlessness of human interpersonal interaction.
