The Social Network

“The Social Network,” directed by David Fincher shows how Mark Zuckerberg created his social media platform, Facebook. It specifically details what led Mark to face two lawsuits after launching his platform, showing there was more hidden truth to the success of this revolutionary platform.

The movie was well written and well-acted. There was never a dull moment from the beginning, and I was hooked instantly into the movie. I never knew much about how Mark created Facebook, so it was a great way to understand some of the history of it. The only flaw in this movie was finding out some parts were exaggerated or not exactly true to reality. With every movie about true-based events, there is always a chance of fabricated parts, but it was still a bit upsetting. Specifically, the movie begins with Mark’s break up with Erica Albright, who is shown as the catalyst for Facebook, only to find out that she does not actually exist. Nonetheless, the more interesting parts such as lawsuits were true, and Marc was painted as this guy who did whatever he could to make his website successful regardless of who he could have hurt in the process.

One of the more interesting parts was the moment Marc knew he could finally launch Facebook. After he added the relationship status part to the website he felt as if the app was ready. Till this day, social media is used as a way for people to meet and date others. Nowadays, we have apps like Tinder and Bumble, which are made for meeting people online and dating them, but people still look through social media when interested in someone; they go online and find their profile to see if they are single/dating and figure who this person is. So, although on apps like Instagram there is nowhere to post your relationship status, people can still use it as a dating app of sorts as lots of people “slide” into others private messages and start to date.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, and it was a compelling way to see a part of the evolution of one of the most popular apps on the internet.
