Noah Tesfaye: Restoring Youth Civic Engagement

Noah Tesfaye’s Ted Talk served as a very persuasive piece, educating viewers on the importance of voting. He highlighted points such as teaching civic engagement in middle schools and even went on to say that it was the single ” most important class”. I didn’t fully agree with that, but I did agree that it would be very helpful if civic engagement is taught. With the structure of a democracy, it is your duty to educate yourself, and in this fast paced world, it’s easy to procrastinate ‘learning’ until it’s too late and then one might tend to shy away from voting, because they feel undereducated and do not want to make a misinformed decision. I too am victim to this. Being a US Citizen that grew up outside the US, I only ever bothered to keep up with presidential elections, and now, I have little knowledge on midterm elections. It is unfortunate because states are the authority that set the laws. It makes me wonder how many people fall into the same trap or for other reasons, and fail to exercise their civic duty. If only a small percentage of us are voting how is that going to be a true reflection of the people’s opinion? It also makes me wonder if there’s some biases involved. Is there anything that prevents people in marginalized communities from voting?
