In The Social Network, the producers discuss the formulation of Facebook through short vignettes and legal testimony from two lawsuits against Mark Zuckerberg by the Winklevoss twins and Eduardo Saverin for their respective roles in the creation of the company.
The movie is not kind in its depiction of Zuckerberg but is effective at highlighting his brilliance. His ability to break down the concept of sociableness and build a platform that allows people to engage socially online was pure genius.
“We lived on farms, then we lived in cities, and now we’re going to live on the internet!” Sean Parker, founder of Napster and one of Zuckerberg’s early business partners, said.
As a result of social media, how we experience friendship and the effects of socialness have changed dramatically. I can’t imagine that everything has worked out just as Zuckerberg planned, but he got what he wanted – control of the ship.
I did not watch this but have heard of it many times and plan on watching it. It seems so interesting how Facebook changed the world in terms of connecting people. I imagine that other social media platforms use Facebook as inspiration as it was one of the first ones to be so popular. Even though Facebook is decreasing in popularity, it is important to study due to its significance in the history of technology.
I have not seen this film yet either but it is on my watch list. I think that Facebook laid the ground work for other social media platforms. They created a way for people to share moments in their lives with those in their circle of friends without being geographically close to them. In addition, they invited the “Like” button which other social media platforms, such as Instagram and Twitter, have copied.
