Comments from nominator:
Professor Zimmers guided me throughout my undergraduate education. I would not be who I am today without him. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He's always willing to help out a student in need. He is someone I highly regard now, and will continue to look up to for the rest of my life.
Mentor comments:
For me, mentoring often has three components:
1. listening and understanding the student views or perspectives
2. establishing mutually agreed to goals
3. working to impart knowledge I have gained through experience to the student, often using project work as the context
In my view, mentoring is meaningful because there is a high retention rate as well as significant application skill development for the concepts being mastered. Anecdotally, there appears to be a positive benefit in the rate of career advancement and the development of leadership skill sets.
