Mentoring is helping a student realize their potential. It works well when both parties respect each other and can engage in an open dialogue-challenging each other and honing ideas. When we work together as collaborators, we raise each other up. One of my favorite parts of being a scientist is the excitement of brainstorming a new research project, or contemplating what a new set of results means for broader theories. That joy in science is increased when a student collaborator is part of the dialogue.
