Urban Heat Islands

Urban Heat Islands: This investigation focuses on the urban heat island effect, and the impact of man made structures and building materials on the environment and localized temperature. Students use infrared thermometers to determine and record surface temperatures in the area surrounding the school. Mentors assist in data collect, explanation of the UHI effect, and help students recognize and explain the differences in various surface temperatures based on surface type, land use density, and time of day/year.
