Short Biography

Prof. Nelson Tansu is Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI Fellow; elected in 2016). Tansu is the Daniel E. ’39 and Patricia M. Smith Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and Director for the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN) at Lehigh University. He had made seminal advances to the invention and innovation, fundamental sciences, and device technologies of III-V and III-Nitride semiconductors. Specifically, his innovations have impacted areas of dilute-nitride diode lasers, and III-nitride semiconductor technologies for energy efficiency. He has more than 16 US patents, and his work is integrated in today’s state-of-the-art solid state lighting technology. He has authored more than 124+ refereed journals and 262+ conference publications. His life story as a professor was published in the form of best-selling children’s book “Nelson the Boy who Loved to Read” in his native country Indonesia. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Photonics and Editorial Board Members in 8 other leading journals in applied physics and nanotechnology.

Short Biography

Dr. Renbo Song oversees the facility operation of the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN). His areas of interest include MOCVD and new epitaxy technologies for wide bandgap semiconductors. He has both the industrial and academic experience, and presently he works closely with other technical staffs within the CPN.

Short Biography

Wei Sun was born in November 1987, and received his B.S. degree of Electronic & Information Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology (China) in 2009. Since January 2014, he has been a PhD student in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN) at Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA, USA).

His research is related to III-Nitride semiconductor nanostructures for solid-state lighting technologies, covering various aspects of the theoretical/experimental physics and device fabrication of III-Nitride Nano-scale semiconductor. His topics include the pursuit of surface plasmon application in LEDs as well as the efficiency-droop suppression process in III-Nitride based semiconductors.

Short Biography

Ioannis Fragkos was born in February 1988 and he received his B.S degree from Physics Department of University of Crete, Greece in September 2010 and his M.S degree in the field of Micro-Optoelectronics from the same department in 2012. His M.S thesis was related to the growth and characterization of AZO thin films via sputtering technique. In 2012 he was accepted as a grant holder from the institute of CENIMAT-Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa-Portugal. Since January 2014, he has been a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN) at Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA).

His research areas are related to III-Nitride semiconductor nanostructures for solid state lighting technologies. His research works cover the theoretical and experimental aspects of the physics in nano-scale semiconductor, MOCVD and device fabrications of III-Nitride semiconductor devices on GaN substrates. His research works cover the theoretical and experimental study of GaN-based light emitting diodes as well as methods for efficiency improvement in III-Nitride based light emitting diodes.

Damir Borovac was born on August 28th, 1992, and received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 2015. Since June 2015, he has been a PhD student in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN) at Lehigh University. .

Short Biography

Justin C. Goodrich was born on August 19th, 1991, in Somerville, New Jersey. He attended high school at Bridgewater-Raritan High School (2009), in Bridgewater, NJ, and pursued undergraduate degrees in physics (2013) and electrical engineering (2014) at Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, PA. During his undergraduate studies, Justin participated in several research projects, including a theoretical investigation of plasmonic enhancement in tandem solar cells, a statistical analysis of the response of a 2D alloy to chaotic motion, and a senior design project successfully demonstrating peer-to-peer communication via visible white light LEDs.

Upon graduation in 2014, Justin worked in industry in the power generation division of POWER Engineers, Inc., as an instrumentation and controls engineer. Here he supported the detail design for several coal-fired and gas-fired power plants, substations, and carbon capture systems. Since the summer of 2016, Justin returned to Lehigh University as a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Center for Photonics and Nanotechnology (CPN) at Lehigh University.

His research areas are related to III-Nitride semiconductors, theoretical and experimental aspects of the physics of nanoscale semiconductors, and MOCVD and device fabrications of III-Nitride semiconductor devices on GaN substrates. His research interests include: optoelectronic devices, power electronic/MOSFET/HEMT structures, and properties of dilute anion III-nitride semiconductors.

Short Biography

Onoriode Ogidi-Ekoko received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 2015. He then obtained his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 2016, also from Lehigh University. Between 2016 and 2017, he was a visiting scholar at the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics working with the Tansu Group where he did power electronics research for III-Nitride semiconductors. He started his PhD in the Fall of 2017 and is currently involved in multiple projects with a focus on GaN-based power electronics devices.

Austin Slosberg was born on February 21st, 1994 and he received his B.S. degree(Physics) from University of Rochester in June 2016. Since September 2016, he has been a Master’s student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN) at Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA).

His research areas are related to III-Nitride semiconductor nanostructures for solid state lighting technologies. His research works cover the optical properties of Subwavelength Grating mirrors and the potential benefits they have for future III-Nitride blue emitting Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs).

Syed Ahmed Al Muyeed received his B.S. degree from the department of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering of University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2014. He received his M.S. degree with a major in Applied Physics and Material Science from the same department (currently known as Electrical and Electronic Engineering) in 2016. His research interest focuses on physics of semiconductor devices, specifically solid state lighting. Currently, he is working on high efficiency light-emitting diodes in the visible range using III-N materials.
