Both the uncertainty over the spread of COVID-19 and the resulting need for social distancing have caused more than a bit of stress these days. In such emotionally trying times, it is tempting to react in harmful and unproductive ways—ways that are based solely on our individual differences rather than on our shared humanity. While we all share in the responsibility to distance ourselves socially for the sake of our own health as well as the health of others, to blame, to stereotype, to discriminate against, to attack, or even merely to silence others only establishes a greater gulf between us, and prevents us from coordinating our efforts to heal as a community. Treating each other with mutual understanding, respect, civility, altruism, and even a sense of humor at times will help us each get through this crisis. International Voices offers a wonderful forum for Lehigh students, faculty, and staff to build on that shared humanity by allowing us to express our perspectives, share our experiences, emphasize our commonalities, and value our differences. We are in this pot of stew together. And, while these troubling times likely mean that our world will not be the same beyond COVID-19, it is my optimistic belief that we have the opportunity to effect positive change for taking care of ourselves and taking care of each other more compassionately. Former US President Barack Obama once stated that change does not just happen when we wait for it: “We are the change we seek.”
