Jason Wehran’s Blog Post #3: Week Ending 06/12/2022

This past weekend I had the grand opportunity of being able to visit Cinque Terre. This was such an unbelievably experience that included a great vibe, wonderful views, and food that tasted like no other. I particularly enjoyed the hike we went on, scaling across the sides of the mountains with a view out onto the sea. I was able to take some incredible pictures and share an unforgettable experience with some of my great friends. Something unexpected that I experienced was the great tasting seafood that was sold. For some reason it didn’t click in my mind that this place would have great seafood, despite being right next to the sea. When I saw a stand that sold fish and chips, I was immediately bought out, and to one’s surprise, it was the best bit of seafood I’ve ever eaten. Cinque Terre is a place I’ll never forget visiting, and it’s somewhere that I’ll recommend my friends back home to go visit if they ever happen to be in Italy.

My internship this week provided me with yet again great experiences and opportunities to develop my interpersonal and collaborative skills. This week I was able to work along side employees of Circularity in which they gave me feedback on the work I had produced so far, and what I could work on/improve going forward. This feedback system, while familiar in style, is something to which I have never experienced in the work world. This new experience has allowed me to gain further insight on how a company operates through its segmentation of work, and how sections of company’s work together to achieve their common goal. While I did collaborate on a work basis with my coworkers, I also got the change to know more about their lives outside of the office, which provided a great way for me to socialize and practice my Italian.

Class with Professor Gupta this week was yet again very interesting, and full of opportunities to discuss the different aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility. Something really interesting that we discussed this week is how surface level care of the community by the company can provide even the smallest reason for investors to stay. For example, we talked about the reasoning as to why Twitter, a free speech platform, still reports sensitive tweets on the basis that they in reality have no reason to. We came to the conclusion that it is in the best interest of Twitter to do this so that they give their investors (or advertisers) a reason to stay with the company. Advertisers will not be willing to pay if they do not see some sort of action within a controversial area of the internet, especially a platform such a twitter that promotes the frequent use of the app. We discussed many other interesting CSR related stories in class, which has led to my broader understanding of this subject, and thus greater knowledge all around.
