Four Artist-Photographers

October 2, 2013 - December 8, 2013

A Virtual Exhibition featuring Ed Vatza, Karina Skvirsky, Anne Gridley, and Thomas Shillea with Steven Lichak

Conceptual videos and still image work by four local artist/photographers presented as part of Lehigh Valley Photography Month in conjunction with ArtsQuest’s InVision Photo Festival, November 2013.

In his ongoing series, Alone Among Millions, photographer Ed Vatza tracks individuals isolated amid the busy street life of New York City. Destitute, ignored, or merely overlooked, his subjects become islands of private life in public places.

Karina Skvirsky’s two-channel video The Conversation is a narrative of surveillance and shifting authority structures. Played out in an exchange between the artist and the police, this documentary-like reverie meditates on the political and philosophical realities associated with the public act of photographing in the 21st century.

Photographer Anne Gridley collects evidence of an Interior America that has been used, repaired, and stood the test of time. These un-staged views of roadside Americana nurture a renewed hope in what is “American” amid a disappearing landscape.

Thomas Shillea, photographer & Steven Lichak, videographer, have collaborated to capture the essence of the artist known as WYSO (1915-1994) while he was working in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Neither knew of each other’s work until 20 years after the artist’s death. WYSO: In His Own Words shows the artist at work as he develops a sculpture, “The Sax Man.”
