An exhibition of sculpture, painted plaster, pen & ink drawings, and photographs by renowned American sculptor, George Segal.

George Segal (1924-2000) studied at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art,  Pratt Institute School of Art and Design,  and New York University.  He received an MFA and honorary doctorate from Rutgers University.  He taught art at the secondary-school level, and visual art and sculpture at Princeton University.  His sculpture experiments plaster casts, wire mesh, and bandaging produced figures that were acclaimed for their modernist realism.  Since 1956, his work has been included in every major contemporary exhibition dealing with sculpture, Pop Art, environments and the figure.  Segal, usually identified with his direct-cast plaster figures, also worked in the mediums of drawing, printmaking, and photography.  His work can be seen in major museums and in public spaces throughout the country, from the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C., to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York.

Lehigh University’s permanent collection now includes a 50-by-38-inch pastel drawing by George Segal entitled Marisol (1996).  The work is currently on display in the Lower Gallery, Zoellner Arts Center.

The George and Helen Segal Foundation has given Lehigh University permission to cast Woman on a Park Bench (1999).  This important bronze will then be sited on campus as part of Lehigh’s permanent outdoor sculpture collection.

The exhibition George Segal: An Intimate Portrait, Photographs by Donald Lokuta runs concurrently at DuBois Gallery, Maginnes Hall.
