Lehigh University Art Galleries is pleased to present the work of Philip Pearlstein.  An American contemporary realist painter, Pearlstein is a technical master who focuses on the nude human figure.  His career encompasses over 100 solo exhibitions, and over 300 collective group exhibitions.  His work is included in the collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, NY.

Pearlstein began his career in the 1960s as an expressionist landscape painter.  Dissatisfied with this approach, he began to paint live studio nudes.  Pearlstein explains, “My paintings are solutions to three problems: how we see, how we paint what we see, and how we turn three-dimensional experiences into two-dimensional ones.”

The exhibition at the Main Gallery, Zoellner Arts Center brings together several large watercolors, one drawing and one oil painting along  with studio objects from Pearstein’s collection.  Pearlstein’s prints (some in progressive stages), his sketchbooks, drawings and posters are presented at the DuBois Gallery, Maginnes Hall.

A visual literacy laboratory, the exhibition is also a collaboration with the Lehigh University Department of Art & Architecture: Art15: Figure and Art; Art 169 Seminar: Female Nude in Art, as well as with ArtsLehigh and the Humanities Center.
