THE VIEW FROM HERE – ISSUES OF CULTURAL IDENTITY & PERSPECTIVE IN CONTEMPORARY RUSSIAN AND AMERICAN ART

October 8, 2003 - December 21, 2003

In conjunction with the exhibition, Lehigh Associate Professor of Modern Languages, Mary A. Nicholas will offer a First-Year Seminar, “The View From Here: Images of America in Contemporary Literature”.

Heralded in Moscow as Russia’s largest contemporary art show of the decade, the U.S. exhibition tour includes a selection of 70 innovative screenprints by over 20 leading artists, including Vitaly Komar & Alexander Malamid, Yuri Avvakumov, Igor Makarevich, William Christenberry, Jaune Quick-to-See-Smith, Alexander Brodsky, Carrie Mae Weems and Pavel Makov. It attempts to create a new dialogue between the two countries, with fascinating comparisons of the heritage and culture of both societies. Previously exhibited at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia; Miami University Art Museum of Ohio, and the Gallery of Contemporary Art at University of Colorado.
