Mechanism Project – Cardboard Iteration

Mechanism Project Assignment:

  • This project that I worked on is called the Pear Shaped CAM.
  • A CAM changes the input motion, which is usually rotary motion to a reciprocating motion of the follower. They are found in many toys and machines.
  • The CAM is comprised of two main parts: The follower (T-shaped mechanism) and the CAM profile (Pear-shaped mechanism).
  • As the pear shaped mechanism rotates up towards the tip and pushes the follower up. As the pear shape rotates back down pointing towards he bottom the T-shaped follower will fall back down into place.
  • Recommendations for future improvements: Build a handle to manually crank the mechanism and rotate the pear, When laser cutting parts do not separate the T-shaped follower into separate parts, Try a 3-D model of this to improve functionality.
  • The first image shows the Pear Shaped Cam in Auto Fusion 360 which I outlined to then laser print.
  • The second image shows the card board version of the assembly I completed of this version.
  • The last image shows the DXF trace out of what was sent to the laser printer to cut out.
