  • Prof. Vermaak is named as Founding Chair of the Design of Engineering Materials Technical Committee for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
  • PhD Candidate X. JIA recognized for research in composite material design for wear applications – she won 2nd place in in the 2018 American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (ASME IMECE) NSF Student Poster Competition. She also received a travel grant to attend the competition. Congratulations Xiu! The 2018 ASME IMECE Track 15 NSF Student Poster Competition is a student-centered IMECE-wide poster session for NSF-funded research.
  • Prof. Vermaak led a collaborative chapter “Some Graphical Interpretations of Melan’s Theorem for Shakedown Design” that is included in the book Advances in Direct Methods for Materials and Structures from Springer.

2017

  • PhD Candidate Xiu JIA named the 2017 Leslie Sperling Award Winner by the Lehigh Center for Polymer Science and Engineering and Emulsion Polymers Institute. This award provides support for doctoral students to attend a professional meeting in the fi elds of chemistry, chemical engineering, materials sciences, mechanical
    engineering, and physics relating to some aspect of the field of polymer science and engineering.
  • PhD Candidate Xiu JIA gave an Invited Presentation at 54th Annual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science (SES), Boston, MA, July 2017.

  • Prof. Vermaak received the Young Leader Award from TMS (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society) Structural Materials Division.
  • Prof. Vermaak awarded AFOSR Summer Faculty Fellowship (Air Force Office of Scienti fic Research) at WPAFB/RQVC.
  • PhD students I. Soner CINOGLU and Xiu JIA named P.C. Rossin Doctoral Fellows. The primary objective of the program is to enhance the preparation of selected Lehigh engineering doctoral students for successful future academic careers.

  • Florian FEPPON (visiting graduate student from Ecole Polytechnique, France) awarded prestigious award for Master’s research in Applied Mathematics: Medaille Louis-Edouard Rivot from the French Academie des Sciences for his work with Prof. Vermaak and Krick at Lehigh University.
  • PhD student I. Soner CINOGLU awarded International Research Fellowship by ICMR: International Center for Materials Research (NSF-MPSDMR 0843934) for research visit to Prof. M. Staat’s group at Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Julich, Germany.

  • Prof. Vermaak named TMS Representative (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society) and participated in the Emerging Leaders Alliance Capstone Program.
  • Undergraduate researcher W. P. SCOTT ’14 named 1st Place Winner of Stratasys Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge in the Art & Architecture category. Mr. Scott presented a conference paper on the use of topology optimization in the design of his The Xiphias Concept car chassis. International Conference on Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization (OPTI): Kos Island, Greece, June, 2014.
  • Undergraduate researcher Andrew ZDANOWICZ ’17 awarded LU-FSRG: Lehigh University Forum Student Research Grant on the Investigation of Vibration Welding for Joining Hybrid Materials.
