Prof. Vermaak honored as 2018 Outstanding Reviewer for Acta Materialia
Prof. Vermaak led a collaborative chapter “Topology Optimization with Interfaces” that is included in the new book Architectured Materials in Nature and Engineering that is a part of the Springer Series in Materials Science.
Vermaak Group research on inelastic design for metals highlighted by industry (MTS and Trilion). in a joint article from MTS Systems Corporation, a provider of testing and sensing solutions, and Trilion Quality Systems, developer of precision 3D optical measurement and inspection testing devices. MTS and Trilion featured Prof. Vermaak’s leading work on the cyclic inelastic design of materials and structures in complex multiaxial high temperature environments using her thermostructural rig. Vermaak’s research group has developed a test rig that combines a mechanical axial-torsional testing machine with high temperature induction heating, thermography, and high-temperature strain measurement via extensometry and Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Prof. Vermaak is named as Founding Chair of the Design of Engineering Materials Technical Committee for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
PhD Candidate X. JIA recognized for research in composite material design for wear applications – she won 2^nd place in in the 2018 American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (ASME IMECE) NSF Student Poster Competition. She also received a travel grant to attend the competition. Congratulations Xiu! The 2018 ASME IMECE Track 15 NSF Student Poster Competition is a student-centered IMECE-wide poster session for NSF-funded research.

Undergraduate researcher W. P. SCOTT ’14 named 1^st Place Winner of Stratasys Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge in the Art & Architecture category. Mr. Scott presented a conference paper on the use of topology optimization in the design of his The Xiphias Concept car chassis.
