Heatwaves in Asia

The media source I am covering is a youtube video from CNA, which is a Singapore multinational news channel, covering extreme heat waves which hit Asia in April of this year. The video explains that heatwaves in Asia are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. The extreme nature of the heatwaves in April 2023 is exacerbated by the longer-term impact of climate change. The video also highlights the importance of taking action to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The issue at hand here is obviously the extremely high temperatures afflicting the Southeast Asia region. The video states that the people most affected by the heat are mostly poorer farmers and others who might not have easy access to shelter or air conditioning as well as for many having to work outdoors during the day. These people are at risk of dehydration and heat stroke as a result of the extreme conditions. Many plants and animals are also affected if they are unable to handle the unusually high temperatures and ecosystems suffer. High temperatures and heat waves have always been possible during this time of year in the region, but this past April heat waves have been far more frequent and intense. The professor being interviewed in the video says that this is a result of human caused global warming. The video also proposes some steps that governments must take to prevent the heat from getting worse year by year. The government needs to do a better job of making sure people have shelter and ways to keep cool in the short term. Long term all nations, developed and developing, must reduce carbon emissions or the heat waves will only be more of a problem year by year. A way to help this is to boost public awareness in the region that the increased heat is a result of global warming and will only get worse if governments do nothing to reduce carbon emissions. The heat waves have been hitting all of Asia but as you can see from the map Southeast Asia and India are being affected most severely.
