Transparency Campaign

The purpose of the #TransparencyCampaign is to spread information about gender-based violence (GBV) at Lehigh University.

As a result of research conducted by The Resistance Lab at Lehigh demonstrating that students want more transparency around GBV resources, policies, and statistics, our goal is to address those suggestions through social media posts. This page includes a collection of all posts so far.

**If you are looking for gender-based violence resources, please refer to our “Resource” tab**
Please send any suggestions/resources/services you may have to Dr. Johnson at nij316@lehigh.edu. Or, fill out our anonymous survey here.

March 16 – The Women’s Center was founded in 1991. It started as a part of the counseling center – they did outreach, programming, and a gender-violence support group in Johnson Hall. Before that, the counseling center had one group for women: the SAAHS (Sexual Assault Awareness/Sexual Healing Group). The Women’s Center separated from the counseling center so as not to pathologize women and became a part of general student affairs. Then, the aspect of gender-violence education and support separated from the Women’s Center entirely in 2014, becoming its own office: The Center for Gender Equity.

March 17 – In 1991-1992, a Rape Crisis Committee formed. Then in 2002, the committee used its research to make a report and obtained a grant toward the prevention of gender-based violence on campus. The Sexual Assault Review Committee (SARC) started a task force that would issue recommendations every few years. This task force also informed the research that led to our current programming – in 1999, the first student study on this issue at Lehigh showed students wanting peer support through a crisis referral hotline. The university responded a few short years later with Breaking the Silence (BTS), a peer educator group that still exists today.

Learn more about BTS tomorrow!

March 18 – Breaking the Silence itself started in 2003, when they recruited their first group of advocates. They kicked it off in 2004 and started a hotline in 2005. Since 2010, BTS has expanded to its current form: public and accessible to the whole campus. Today, you can call an advocate at any hour of the day, or read more about their work here:

In 1991, an advocacy group formed, called ICARE (Individuals Concerned About Rape Everywhere). Despite this great intention, we are glad this acronym no longer exists! ICARE kicked off its first advocates program, a 24/7 contact for gender-violence survivors. Sound familiar? We still have advocates today!

Since 2010, advocates have expanded to its current form: public and accessible to the whole campus. Today, you can call an advocate at any hour of the day, or read more about their work here:
