The Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen is one of Europe’s oldest universities. At this university – more commonly known as the University of Tübingen – graduate students at Lehigh with little or no knowledge of German are provided with an opportunity to take a variety of coursework in English or conduct university-supervised research. Lehigh students take courses and conduct research out of the University of Tübingen’s Institute of Education. The Institute is the largest educational science university institute in Baden-Württemberg, and the University of Tübingen is one of a select group of “universities of excellence” in Germany.
The University of Tübingen was founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard “the Bearded” of Württemberg, and has produced some of the most globally-renowned scholars, including Hegel, Hölderlin and Schelling, Mörike and Uhland, Johannes Kepler and Wilhelm Schickard. Located in the Swabian region of Baden-Württemberg in Southwestern Germany, Lehigh students can enjoy the atmosphere and study an abundance of educational, artistic, cultural, and intellectual opportunities located in Tübingen as well as nearby cities, such as Stuttgart and Frankfurt all the while based in a small, quiet, and secure city, untouched by mass tourism.
The University of Tübingen is one of Germany’s most prestigious and oldest universities; internationally noted in medicine, natural sciences, and humanities. It is not a ‘campus university’ like Lehigh (and most American universities), but is spread throughout the city of Tübingen. Tübingen is located in the Swabian region of Baden-Württemberg in Southwest Germany, and is nearby to France (especially Strasbourg) by train, the Black Forest (including Freiburg), and the Swiss Alps. Tübingen dates from the 12th century and is now a thriving small city of about 83,000 inhabitants and 27,000 students. It is located only 19 miles south of Stuttgart, which is the state capital of Baden-Württemberg. Frankfurt is also only about a 40 minute train ride away. Tübingen combines the flair of a lovingly restored medieval center of town with the colorful bustle and typical atmosphere of a young and cosmopolitan students’ town. It is one of five classical “university towns” in Germany and home of many poets and philosophers.
The town offers many possibilities for social life:
- boat trips on the “Neckar” river,
- breaks at the Neckar riverside and the botanic gardens,
- cafés, restaurants and bars
- events and activities hosted by the DAI (German American Institute) http://www.dai-tuebingen.de/en
- Christmas market, chocolate market, music festivals
- Faculty student parties
