Project description:
Sierra Leone has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world, and the nation has responded with recent health care innovations that attempt to address this crisis. This team has focused on specific challenges and responsive innovations to confront the maternal health crisis. Our long-term goal is to produce a festival-ready documentary film. At this point, we are focused on relating three shorter stories that highlight both the extent of the problem and some of the innovations: (1) the impact of midwifery training, (2) the education of local surgeons, and (3) the operations of the weekly pre-natal care days. In 2020, we will return to Sierra Leone to conduct additional field work, engage the local health care system, produce additional shorter videos, and work toward the full-length documentary film. We will distribute these shorter videos in online formats to garner publicity and financial support for our project.
