Quite a while ago now, I published an article in American Quarterly that was a pure labor of love – an analysis of a whole cache of pamphlets from the antebellum period purportedly written by “female fiends.” What’s not to love about that? They are fascinating reads, and – I guess what struck me so much at the time – they are completely and utterly at odds with the reigning ideals defining (and constraining) women that absolutely pervaded the mainstream literature of the time.
