In the world of healthcare innovation, progress is often a result of overcoming obstacles and adapting to unexpected situations. Such was the case for the dedicated team behind AISHA, a revolutionary healthcare system aiming to transform the way medical information is accessed and disseminated. On a recent mission to Makeni Regional hospital, the team encountered a series of challenges that underscored the importance of addressing critical issues, both in technology and accessibility.
The day began with a later start than anticipated, as the drivers were juggling a demanding morning schedule. Unlike other teams working tirelessly on focus groups and interviews, the AISHA team’s patience was tested as they awaited their departure from the hotel. Nevertheless, the team, consisting of members Sofía, Elif, Rachel, and Eric, embarked on their journey to the Makeni Regional hospital, eager to gain insights and make progress.
Sofía and Elif’s anticipation to observe and shadow medical professionals in the Reproductive Health and Family Planning ward was met with disappointment, as the ward was unexpectedly closed for the day. Undeterred, they swiftly adjusted their plans and joined their colleagues, Omar, Aabi, and Zavier, to embark on other responsibilities at World Hope International.
Meanwhile, Rachel, Eric, and AISHA’s reliable translator, Rhandolph, remained at Makeni Regional to observe and shadow their own medical interactions. In the Nutrition ward, they engaged with Nurse Fatmata, reconnecting with her expertise. They ventured into the Special Baby Care Unit (SBCU), where the challenges of maintaining vital medical equipment became evident. The shortage of trained technicians and working incubators highlighted the gaps in the healthcare system.
Their exploration continued at the Antenatal Clinic (ANC) where care is given in the facets of labor, preoperative, postoperative, postnatal, and maternal. The conversations with Nurse Zainas shed light on the multifaceted challenges that healthcare workers face daily. The team also engaged with Human Resources Officer Santigie Kanu and Dr. Vandi Bunduka in the Nutrition ward, recognizing the need for support staff and resources.
One recurring theme throughout the day was the shortage of staff, from medical professionals to essential support staff like cleaners. The strain on healthcare workers was evident, and the team realized the crucial role adequate compensation plays in retaining skilled individuals.
Despite these challenges, the AISHA team’s determination remained steadfast. They embarked on a diverse range of tasks, from developing the AISHA Meds skill to strategizing implementation for the District Health Management Team (DHMT). Sofía and Elif’s efforts to present AISHA’s progress at the DHMT meeting showcased their commitment to expanding the project’s reach.
As the day progressed, the team’s efforts extended to community engagement. A community demo of AISHA Lessons was scheduled at Makump Bana PHU, targeting mothers and children. The team faced technical obstacles, notably connectivity issues and a malfunctioning power strip. Their creative attempts to improvise and ensure the community demo’s success emphasized the significance of reliable technology infrastructure.
Despite the challenges, the Newtrition team reaped rewards from their community engagement efforts, receiving valuable feedback and expanding their customer base. The day concluded with the team reflecting on their experiences, celebrating their achievements, and acknowledging the lessons learned from the trials they encountered.
This eventful day with the AISHA team serves as a reminder that innovation in healthcare is a dynamic process. It requires not only technical expertise but also resilience in the face of challenges. The team’s determination to address critical issues like access to power and reliable internet connectivity underscores the importance of fostering an environment where technological advancements align with the needs of the healthcare sector. As AISHA continues its journey, these lessons will undoubtedly contribute to its evolution as a transformative force in healthcare information dissemination.
