Individual prompts:

1. Give three examples of something very interesting you learned from a friend that was a completely alien concept to you.

  1. One of my friends studies Industrial and Systems Engineering and she had described that in one of her classes they learned how certain amounts of movements while working in a factory is what makes it efficient. So, if someone moves x amount of time or repeats a certain movement x amount of time this determines if the system runs efficiently or not. I had no idea this was even a concept to be studied so this was something that was very alien to me when she discussed it.
  2. One of my friends is from New York and she mentioned once that she had to apply to get into middle school and high school. She described how the education system in New York works and it fascinated me since I am used to the idea that wherever you live is which school you go to.
  3. A friend of mine comes from a Caribbean household, and there were many times where she explained their cultural norms that I had no idea about. The different foods, gender roles and overall culture was something that was a completely alien concept to me.

2. List ten things that make you feel human.

  1. Going for walks outside and enjoying the nature
  2. Baking
  3. Reading
  4. Engaging in meaningful conversation
  5. Learning new concepts
  6. Eating food
  7. Laughing with other people
  8. Picking out outfits to wear
  9. Spending time with friends or family
  10. Crying

3. Articulate your philosophy of engagement as it pertains to your work with the Impact Fellowship. Specifically discuss:

  • Why should I engage?
    • Engaging to learn and wanting to make a difference is very important to me. Learning new things in this different context is an important skill to have, and doing so will help me grow as a student.
  • How must I engage?
    • In order to engage I have to set aside time and put genuine effort into this. Simply completing this just because they are due or because I “have to” is not sufficient for how to engage.
  • With whom must I engage?
    • I must engage with my peers and other resources that we find for this project. Examples of this include professors or other professionals in this intersectional field.
  • What kinds of challenges, opportunities, and approaches should I care about?
    • There are many challenges as well as opportunities to care about. However, I believe that sometimes challenges can turn into opportunities. For instance, if we have trouble with internet connectivity, we can use this as a chance to learn more about how to utilize technology in low resource settings.
  • What might my epitaph read?
    • I don’t really know, if I had to give a guess maybe something along the lines of love or family or passion?

Team prompts:

1. What are the technological, social, economic, and political trends that will impact (help or hurt) your ventures?

  • Social
    • With the continuing rise of technology, data privacy is becoming more and more of a persisting issue. This may hurt our venture in terms of implementing an AI in the healthcare industry, and how patient data will be kept private.
  • Tech
    • AI is becoming a rising field in the tech field, and so this is something that will definitely help our venture. Furthermore, there is a lot more intersection with health and technology which will allow us to have more resources within this field.
  • Economic
    • The current economic crisis is a trend that might hurt our venture as it may result in an inability to invest in this project from potential investors.
  • Political
    • In Sierra Leone, they are going to have elections in the summer, and there is a possibility that the public can have a negative reaction to the outcomes. This can impact fieldwork as it might be canceled which can hurt our venture.

1. Does your work require IRB approvalsright now? At a later stage? If Yes, articulate your detailed IRB strategy. If No, explain why you don’t need IRB approval and identify situations when you might need IRB approval.

Currently, we are not working on obtaining IRB approval. The main reasoning behind this is because our project is still in the very early stages. This means we are still researching a lot about the healthcare system in Sierra Leone, as well as understanding how AI can be better utilized for the healthcare field. Furthermore, we are trying to come up with ideas for use cases for certain Alexa fields that we may demo in Sierra Leone. As we continue to go through this process, our project will become more fleshed out, and then we will be able to see if we would need to obtain IRB approvals in the future.

2. Based on your life experience, skills and interests, what would a design process that is both uniquely yours and effective look like?

I am very much so a person who thrives off of routine and consistency. I try to always look ahead whenever possible and plan accordingly to the given circumstances. However, of course there are times when things don’t go according to plan and you have to improvise and adjust the original ideas you had in mind. If I had to make a design process based off these factors, I would create something to have a clear structure but design it to allow for bumps in the road. For instance, if we say that research happens in the beginning of the project and then we move on, but something in the future requires research again. We wouldn’t say “no you can’t research that because we aren’t in the beginning of the design process”, we would recognize that it’s needed again in the middle of process. Therefore, I would create a design that has a base structure but allows for flexibility.

3. Identify your three most important stakeholders and list five UNIQUE attributes for each one of them.

4. Identify three ways in which you will validate your project concept, technology, usability, and business model.

  • We will validate the usability mainly in country when the healthcare workers will try to use Alexa in their work life to assist patients. Then, we will be able to see how the device/product is working and what changes need to be made.
  • To validate our technology we will continue to develop Alexa skills and see how she can respond to different scenarios.
  • To validate our project concept we will have to continue to do research to better understand how to best effectively utilize AI and healthcare, and see where our improvements for project concept could be made.

  1. Identify the two most important social, economic, and environmental bottom lines that matter to your project.

Two most important factors are improving social and overall health well being, as well as saving healthcare costs.

  1. Describe ten cultural factors that might impact your project at various phases in its lifecycle.
  1. Lack of trust in technology
  2. Lack of digital literacy and access to technology
  3. Cultural beliefs about health and illness
  4. Traditional healing practices
  5. Limited financial resources for healthcare technology
  6. Social and economic inequalities
  7. Limited infrastructure and connectivity
  8. Language barriers
  9. Lack of government support and regulation
  10. Ethical concerns surrounding privacy and data usage

  1. Give three examples of cultural practices that can be leveraged to address community / market problems.
  • Cooperative Farming: In Sierra Leone, cooperative farming is a traditional cultural practice that can be leveraged to address both community and market problems. By pooling resources and labor, small-scale farmers can increase production and access markets more efficiently.
  • Traditional Markets: Traditional markets, such as the Kono market, are an important part of Sierra Leonean culture and economy. These markets can be leveraged to address market problems by providing a platform for small-scale producers to sell their products and connect with buyers.
  • Youth Mentorship: Sierra Leone has a rich tradition of mentorship, with elders passing down knowledge and skills to the younger generation. This practice can be leveraged to address community problems by providing training and support to young people, helping them develop the skills they need to become successful entrepreneurs and leaders.
