An exhibition of works by seven nationally known artists and craftsmen:  Tom Loeser, Isabelle Moore, Jere Osgood, Cheryl Riley, Brent Skidmore, Travis Townsend, and Leah Woods.

This exhibition explores and celebrates the process of designing and making studio furniture.  Studio furniture is made by hand, by individual artists, and exists as a singular artifact or limited edition.  The artists in this exhibition range from individuals just beginning their careers to those who have been teaching, designing and building furniture for decades.  Each artist has a particular attitude about the relationship between their furniture and its representation.  From sketches to full-scale models to the final piece, this process is considered and documented, revealing the creative process.

Furniture occupies an unusual place in our psyches.  On the one hand, it can be ignored and taken for granted (“part of the furniture”), but on the other it is one of the most intimate of cultural artifacts, surpassed only by clothing in its close relationship to the body.  The drawings

and models in this exhibition are as diverse as the furniture pieces they represent.

Jere Osgood is a Fellow of the American Craft Council and recipient of The Furniture Society’s 2003 Award of Distinction, whose work represents complex construction processes.  Tom Loeser is known for conceptual adventures explored in a series of small models.  Skidmore’s work is humorous, inventive and colorful.  Cheryl Riley’s background in fashion and fine art inspires her designs.  Travis Townsend rebuilds and reconfigures domestic objects, and Isabelle Moore has designed a metal bench based on a pattern from a quilt.  Leah Woods creates furniture in the form of a cabinet evoking the human body, and inspired by a fashion image.

Co-curators are Amy Forsyth, Lehigh University associate professor of art and architecture, and Ricardo Viera, Director, LUAG.  An illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibition.
