Triptych/Tríptico Portraits/Retratos : JUAN SÁNCHEZ
February 11, 2009 - June 14, 2009
Juan Sánchez will be artist-in-residence at Lehigh University, March 12-14, 2009.
Triptych/Tríptico Portraits/Retratos : JUAN SÁNCHEZ is a new experimental departure produced under the artist’s supervision. It consists of three distinct and separate video projections that discuss issues of identity. Madre Selva is an impressionistic video homage to Cuban born artist Ana Mendieta (1947-1985). Facing the Storm is a collaboration between the artist and his daughter, artist Liora Sánchez-Villegas. Prisoner is dedicated to current Puerto Rican political prisoners Carlos Alberto Torres, Oscar Lopez Rivera, Haydée Beltran, and Avelino Gonzalez Claudio. This is Sánchez’ first exhibition that was conceived solely as a video art/new media project.
Sánchez, Professor of Art at Hunter College, NYC, is considered a leading Nuyorican painter, printmaker, and photographer whose work best represents the artist as a politically and spiritually engaged individual. He combines painting and photography with other media to confront America’s political policies and social practices concerning Puerto Rico. Sánchez often addresses Puerto Rico’s battle for independence and the numerous obstacles facing disadvantaged Puerto Ricans in America. He is the recipient of the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.
