Women Photographers
August 29, 2011 - December 16, 2011
From the coal-cellar darkroom of Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) to the hybrid, digital, photomechanical and often camera-less studio of María Martínez-Cañas (1960- ), the history of photography is the history of women. This exhibition traces the evolution and versatility of photography over more than 150 years, highlighting the contribution of women to the art, science and practice of recording light and ideas.
Curated by Ricardo Viera. A project of Advanced Museum Studies students Alex Neumann’11 and Risa Zeller’11. Exhibition catalog features conversations between Geoff Gehman, Lucy Gans, Mary Nicholas, and Patti Boustany’87.
