Let’s make sure nothing goes BOOM
After many long days and nights (well weeks and months really), the growth room is practically ready to go. Exciting! Containment vessels are hooked up with all the cables, wires, and sensors being able to do the things they need to do. Good to go! Well, once we have the gas cabinets that is …
Getting there …
Exciting news: at long last, Chris is getting his research rolling in the lab. Starting off easy with some simple corrosion studies to help us understand some important relationships needed for us to pursue some pretty cool nitride materials. Fingers crossed thermodynamics works in our favor in this unexplored territory!
Gas cabinets are here woohoo! (oh wait …)
Exciting moment! The gas cabinets have finally arrived–woohoo! The long saga of getting the lab constructed will hopefully come to an end soon. Oh wait … they didn’t provide what we asked for. Sigh. Back to waiting …
Sand Volleyball time!
To get the most (and the last) out of the summer, one last round of Team Strandwitz vs. Team Pimputkar on the sand volleyball court! Was great to meet the new team members of Strandwitz’s group and show them out to play ball.
Neurons have been laid …
Fantastic work by the team over the summer and we have reached a point where all the neurons have now been laid in the lab and the brain has been assembled. Still need to kick the tires to check things out, but a huge step forward. Great work team!
Thanks Brian Caruso!
Let’s give Brian a high-five for joining the team for the summer and a big thanks for his help in getting all the thermocouples wires and connectors ready for primetime!
Safety First!
After lots of cable laying and learning how PLC systems work, Pedram has successfully implemented the lab-wide safety system to ensure we can safely perform our research. On to the next step of getting things up and running! Right after the gas cabinets finally arrive …
Newcomer to the Summer Engineering Institute
Prof. Pimputkar developed a new lecture series on the topic of “from phase diagrams to ice cream” to educate excited and ambitious high school students on the topic of material science. Lots of cool material science going on in ice cream and cooling the liquid using saltwater. Was a great time and made some delicious ice cream together. Till next year!
Welcome to the Team: Jacob Dooley!
Always great to expand the team and get some new hands on deck. Let’s welcome Jacob to the fold and cheer him on as he researches the world of boron nitride growth. Welcome!
