In the fall of 2021, our team was announced as the winner of The National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Prize for Healthcare Technologies for Low-Resource Settings. This award was set forth by the Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge, sponsored by VentureWell, the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). More information about the award may be found here. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, the DEBUT Challenge received 76 applications from 47 universities in 26 states, engaging nearly 400 students this year. Several articles have been written by Lehigh University to recognized this achievement (see this link).
Five of our members traveled to Orlando, FL for the award ceremony to take place at the annual Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) meeting. Despite the fact that the ceremony took place virtually due to the COVID-19 situation, two of our members were still able to present our abstract at the conference’s poster session.
