The Critically Conscious Bystander Scale (CCBS) is a 44-item measure that assesses bystander behavior to prevent sexual violence. It is intended to provide a broader assessment than comparable scales by measuring not just direct intervention in situations involving the immediate threat of sexual assault, but also direct intervention in situations involving sexual harassment and two precursors to intervention behaviors (consciousness raising behaviors, and activism/advocacy behaviors).
Three versions of this scale have been developed. One version assesses intentions for future bystander behaviors. The other two versions assess retrospective reports of past behaviors occurring either within the past year, or across the respondent’s lifetime.
