In Information Technology, Its Impact on Society and Its Future, Sararmay Deb outlines the various ways that Information Technology has impacted society, both the good and the bad.
When recalling the various benefits that IT offers society, Deb’s list was quite extensive. She noted how ICT can break down geographical boundaries. She gives the example of photographers now being able to use photo-editing software and printers without having to physically be in a photo studio. In addition, Deb states how helpful ICT has been for those who have a disability. For example, individuals are able to magnify their screens or use screen reading technology. Other positives include collaborative work and online learning capabilities and new opportunities for individuals to be entertained.
One of the most interesting topics that Deb spoke about was technophobic individuals. I have never heard of this phobia prior to reading this article. After doing a quick google search, I learned that technophobia is much more common than I expected. Many people have this intense fear or anxiety about the effects of technology’s advancements. I never thought that people could have these fears but when I pondered it further, technology is quite scary. Deb outlines the other negative effects of IT such as job loss, loss of status and self-esteem due to unemployment, lack of social interaction when working remotely, privacy concerns, information overload, cyberbullying, and reduced physical activity when using IT. Although the article claims that the benefits of IT “outweigh the negative aspects,” these fears and arguments that are presented are all valid and important to keep in mind as technology continues to impact our daily lives. Not all technological advancements benefit society.
Bridget, I did not read this article but I found your discussion of technophobia to be really interesting. I also, have never heard of this term and I am curious if there is a way for people to overcome this, like other phobias. I do agree that for now, the benefits of IT outweigh the negatives, however, I wonder if there will become a point in which the negatives carry more weight.
