When taking a deep dive into CNN’s coverage of the Facebook files, they talked about Facebook’s role in enabling the spread of misinformation and the fallout. One article talked about how Facebook is particularly weak at censoring hate speech and misinformation in different languages, making certain countries experiencing unrest particularly vulnerable. CNN also talks about how little Facebook has done to stop human trafficking.

Facebook’s role in the Jan. 6th attack on the capital is emphasized a lot by CNN. Facebook definitely could’ve stepped in, and the platform absolutely allowed people to radicalize and organize. One article talks about how employees knew and CNN published incriminating messages between employees. However, I would be curious to see if other news outlets emphasized Jan. 6th as much as CNN did. I would be willing to bet that Fox and other right wing outlets are not emphasizing this in their coverage. These outlets are literally emphasizing Facebook’s ban on Donald Trump and perceived censorship more so than the spread of misinformation.

I was taken aback by the article that claimed Facebook promoted Qanon conspiracy theories to North Carolina moms. Again, if Fox News is covering this, I’d be curious how they are approaching it.

All in all, it was obvious that CNN strongly condemns Facebook’s actions. Their reporting shows me that Facebook could have done so much more to stop the spread of misinformation that is doing so much harm. However, it will be interesting to see how different outlets address this.
