In George Floyd’s death shows the power of social media as the US continues to grapple with racial tensions, Kathryn Diss argues that social media has played an extremely big role in being able to spread the news about police brutality.
Throughout the article, we see multiple ways how social media helped put the spotlight on the George Floyd case, starting with the video going viral less than 24 hours after being posted to social media. If it weren’t for that video in the beginning, the issue probably would have been swept under the rug. However, after it was posted it caught fire and was shared on a national and international basis. Afterward, many celebrities took to social media to speak on the issue and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement such as then Presidential Candidate Joe Biden, Ava Duvernay, Lebron James, and many more people. With how much the world has seen the Black Lives Matter movement progress from this incident, it is clear that social media played an essential part in getting them to that point. With that, Diss is successful in proving her argument.
From a personal perspective, when this issue came to light it sparked much more than just support for George Floyd and his case. Much more support came for others whose situations of police brutality also came to light such as Breonna Taylor and Elijah McClain. It also led to other social movements in support of Black Lives Matter such as #BlackOutTuesday where many people posted black squares on Instagram to show their personal support for the Black Lives Matter movement. It has always been clear to me social media has played a crucial role in this movement and many others like it. As long as social media is around, social justice movements will thrive using it.
Social media plays a huge role, if not the biggest in the recent movements/protests that we have seen. Personally, I find that regarding these topics, I get the most information from social media platforms, as everyone is involved and posting about them. Social media is instant and allows for people to update with information and vocalize their opinions efficiently and quickly. With these movements, I find that more people are involved than they would be in person and social media has transformed how information is spread and continuously discussed.
