Day 6: Makumbana

Today, we got to sleep in until 9:30, which was a treat for the weekend. Once we got to the World Hope office, however, we hit the ground running with another day full of surveying. We started the day in Makumbana, a village about 15 minutes from our hotel along the main highway. The sickle cell joined Nate during his interviews and were able to see our methodology and get a better sense of what a Sierra Leonean village is like. In total, we completed 27 surveys, which was impressive given that we only planned to do a half day of surveying.

After torrential rain, as well as thunder and lighting that began as we were finishing the last few surveys, the day came to an end. In this rainstorm, the team got a surrounded back a lake of rainwater. In a mad dash to not get wet, Nate accidentally rubbed against a wall of chalk and was covered in turquoise chalk for the rest of the day.

During our journey back to Makambo and World Hope, Lindsay and Anna decided that they wanted to stay at the hotel for some better Wifi. The power was out for the some of the afternoon, but they were able to get some work done once the power was back. Nate went to World Hope where there also wasn’t Wifi either, but he got to wear a toga and seemed to enjoy himself.
