Day 12: Spawn Experimentation

As described previously we have been having significant issues with out spawn procedure. Sorghum is expensive and the local sawdust is antifungal so both of our spawn methodologies cannot be used here. We have been trying rice spawn but we have ran into problems with rice being too wet, contaminated, or bug infested. Now that the market is more populated with vendors and life is returning to a somewhat normal state, we were able to source materials for another round of spawn experiments. We purchased cloth, rice, rice sacks, and plastic containers at the market today and traveled to the site. Our first experiment was using plastic containers with holes for drainage, and laying the spawn on top of mesh so that bugs cannot get past the lid or the holes that are now covered but allow for water flow. We also tried bagging directly into cloth instead of plastic bags so passive drainage can take place. Jawara gave us the idea of soaking the rice for a couple of minutes and then hanging it to dry which if the pasteurization time is long enough to kill contaminants, then it will save us a lot of time. Today has had heavy rains but the house is holding up well and not letting water inside which is a great stress test for our structure. Will traveled to Gbondenbu to see if he could find the men who told us they could source banana leaves for our substrate. He was not able to find them, but arranged with a woman we had seen there before for her to gather 5 bags of banana leaves for pickup early tomorrow afternoon. While Will was away, David and Muz stayed at the WH office and worked on more documents. David created a tentative calendar that a worker could follow to see responsibilities and time requirements each day. It appears that there might only be two hard days of work a week with the rest being general maintenance. When Will returned, the team revisited their financial model and discussed the immediate future after they leave. It was decided to ask Khanjan for funds in advance so that the team could purchase all Jawara needed materials for the next month while we still have access to WH trucks as it would cost way more if Jawara had to rent a truck for his own use. It took a bit of talking through potential profit and reasoning but Khanjan agreed to give us 4M more to use before we leave. Although the spawn has been giving us problems, we are on a good path to solving our issues and our grow bags are looking great.
