Days 9-11: The Demonstrations

Our team has not been able to make significant process on a daily basis due to the ongoing demonstrations and strikes. Although we have not experienced anything firsthand, we have heard about a deadly conflict in Freetown. Due to national curfews and internal cautions from our professors, we have been staying within the hotel for a few days. This has given us plenty of time to progress on our document deliverables like our process diagram, production manual, operations manual, and construction manual. The process diagram is for internal use to visualize our overall procedure. The production manual is designed so that anyone with the proper initial resources can produce mushrooms. The operations manual details what a manager of a mushroom house will have to do to provide their employees with adequate resources for mushroom production. The construction manual contains all that is needed for a builder to complete a mushroom house of the model that we have created here in Makeni. Although our progress with growing mushrooms over the past four days has been greatly hindered by not being able to purchase necessary materials in markets, it has provided for a break from work and definitely has created a lot of enjoyment and memories for the team. Once we did get back to the house on Day 11, we found that a lot of our spawn was too wet, contaminated, or bug infested. We pasteurized more rice and let it dry for longer before we inoculated to avoid collection of water. We are going to try a variety of spawn production methods in the coming days as we do not currently have an effective and reliable method for producing spawn. We are considering trying pressure cooking, steaming, using polyfil in bags, using more breathable bag material, using plastic containers, and more options to find a successful way to generate spawn. This all heavily depends on if we can source these resources in the markets. Our advisors believe the strikes will be ending and the market vendors will feel safe to return tomorrow, so we are hoping for the best.
