In the podcast “Women and the Importance of Representation in Tech” the people being interviewed argue that tech companies have a problem and are in need of creating environments that promote diversity and equity by making their spaces more inclusive.
The ones being interviewed explain that there are many obstacles to overcome if you’re a woman or POC trying to get into the technology industry. The main things they call for are for tech companies to be accountable for their mistakes regarding diversity along with following up on their plans of action to help tackle issues in this realm instead of just putting them to the side. One thing they really promoted was this idea of intentional inclusivity. Although not completing understanding this idea through the podcast, looking up the term I saw it described as asking “Who’s not at the table that needs to be?” rather than simply “Who’s at the table?” An easy way to accomplish this are by having spaces for diverse voices to speak and for others to listen. This is extremely important as well because the people in the podcast noted that the pandemic has drastically changed the way people behave towards and expect from women.
I agree with the ideas that are shared in this podcast. Just like an educational institution, you need a diverse range of education, thoughts, and opinions for everyone to learn and listen. In one of my economics classes this year I have also learned that a lack of diversity in a workplace actually hurts a company more than it helps them becomes any company or organization needs different thoughts and ideas from their employees to succeed.
